With the Canadian brand Zoologist, perfumers become zoologists who translate the scent of an animal into a unique perfume.
Absolutely unique & unconventional, absolutely exclusive in the world of niche perfumes.
Some animals take our breath away, others make us laugh because of their clumsiness, and yet others amaze us with their skill and speed. The animal world knows no boundaries, and just as limitless are the exclusive perfumes themselves in the artistic bottles of Zoologist – captivating, unusual, humorous, shocking, and always surprising.
Even for the niche world, the perfumes from Zoologist are a peculiarity. Inspired by the animal world, the intense Extrait de Parfums capture each animal with its peculiarities perfectly in a scent. But how did the former video game developer come up with this unconventional idea?
The Canadian perfume brand for unique luxury and niche perfumes based in Toronto was founded in 2013 by Victor Wong.
Today, the perfume brand, which is represented worldwide with already 21 released fragrances since its founding, collaborates with internationally renowned perfumers and is an indispensable part of the indie perfume scene.
Inspired by the habitats, behaviors, and appearances of numerous animals, the various perfumers capture the majesty, uniqueness, and beauty of the animal world with their scents.
The founder of Zoologist, Victor Wong, could hardly believe his success at first. What began as a hobby developed into a lifelong passion. Wong quit his old job in the video game sector and dedicated himself to his brand with the extraordinary idea: to create the scents of the animal world as exclusive niche perfumes. Zoologist perfumes stand for the return to nature, to our instincts, to simplicity, and yet the special.
The key moment that marked the turning point in Victor Wong's career was a stay in a hotel. The fine cosmetics and their scents so inspired the Zoologist founder that he took up the art of perfumery as a hobby.
With much passion, he gained the approval of numerous esteemed perfumers thanks to the unusual idea, who have already created scents for selected animals – and the animal scent repertoire will continue to grow.
What is special about the brand, truly “Zoologist-like”, is not only the absolutely unique scents but also the exceptionally creative design: elegant bottles in black and gold colors and printed: A rhinoceros in a stately uniform, a beaver in a noble suit and bow tie, or an octopus with a shell-adorned collar and regal scepter.
Just three years after its founding, an animal from the Zoologist lineup won the Arts and Olfaction Award: Bat was awarded in 2016, and the brand was even discussed in a prize-winning article in the New York Times.
In 2020, two Zoologist perfumes were among the finalists for the Arts and Olfaction Award: Bee and Squid. This award honors particularly artistic and experimental perfumes in the perfume scene that were released by independent perfume brands.

Translating the scent of an animal into a perfume – an apparently impossible task? The perfumers of Zoologist perform this miracle time and again. Two reveal their approach to these animalistic good scents.
Rich in facets, exotic, and above all intense – the fragrance aromas of Zoologist perfumes seem to know no bounds. Unlike all other perfume brands, the scents of Zoologist do not attempt to reach the standard of a pleasant-smelling perfume. They stand for authentic fragrances that reflect nature. Not made for the masses, they hold a special place in the world of niche perfumery.
We would like to use two perfumes and their compositions to see the skills with which the perfumers juggle to imitate the unique scents of the animal world. These are the two finalists of the Art and Olfaction Awards 2020: Bee and Squid, created by Cristiano Canali and Celine Barel.
For his thesis in pharmacy studies, Cristiano Canali spent a lot of time with Ayurvedic products from Hindu healing arts. The close collaboration with local producers in his home country of Italy not only taught him a wealth of knowledge about natural active ingredients but also sparked his interest in the art of perfumery. In his perfume compositions, he uses the ingredients in such a way that he can perfectly highlight the synergies and contrasts. This approach allows for ever-new compositions, depending on which ingredients are chosen. His undisputed favorites among perfume ingredients are sandalwood and beeswax, which he also incorporates into the fragrance notes of Bee.
His inspiration was nature with its minimalism and at the same time its complexity: A pollen-rich flower meadow, the dripping nectar of the blossoms, but also heavy musk notes mixed with the creamy texture of sandalwood enrich the incredibly multifaceted scent of Bee. He contrasts the smoky aromas of benzoin with a delicate vanilla. The perfumer emphasizes that no real honey was used in his scent for the honeybee. He brings the “Royal Jelly” accord through another key ingredient, namely beeswax. This component runs through the top, heart, and base notes to echo the flutter of the busy bees. Surrounded by lovely orange concentrate, ginger syrup, broom, and mimosa, Canali creates a scenario of a flower-rich meadow, dotted with gentle and sugary accents. Bee invites you on an olfactory journey with its convincingly authentic ingredients, allowing you to experience the world through its eyes. The constant focus when composing the fragrance: concentration on perception, one's own intuition, the sillage of the perfume, and a certain intimacy.
The challenge of capturing the scent of an octopus was taken on by Celine Barel. Enthralled by the brilliant idea behind Zoologist, the perfumer could immediately identify with the imaginative animal world and wanted to give the octopus an "olfactory identity". The perfume "Squid" has nothing to do with the usual fish smell, but takes you into the dark and somewhat eerie depths of the ocean among all the giant squids. For the intro, Celine Barel chooses a good mix of some melancholy and, of course, ink, characteristic of an octopus. She also places great emphasis on contrasts: the difference between a bright and dark mood, the stormy and gentle side of an octopus.
The discovery of her base note happened unexpectedly during a vacation before she began working on Squid. She injured herself on an octopus bone and discovered its extraordinarily penetrating scent. It now forms the base note and creates the fundamental chords with its airy-light, but also very salty notes. The octopus bone also contains ethereal and floral notes, which is why Barel lets some incense resonate in the top note. The gentle yet extreme aromas of the octopus bone can be incorporated into her fragrance composition thanks to naturally occurring raw materials called "Solar Salicylates". This raw material combines the contrasting components: powerful, salty, floral, airy, ethereal.
The blue coloring of the perfume represents the ink accord. For this, the perfumer went in search of blue raw materials to express the impression of the salty-velvety notes she associates with the ink of an octopus. To create the special density and texture, she processes balsams and resins into the azure essence of the perfume. The result is a marine fragrance of a completely different kind and not comparable with d
Intense and absolutely uniquely good – with the perfumes from Zoologist, you get to know the feeling of life of animals.
The idea behind Zoologist is to take inspiration from the animal kingdom. The winged nature of a bird, the creative courage of a beaver, and the prudence of an elephant. The perfumers select the active ingredients for their animal scents in such a way that the respective characteristics of the animal and their characteristic behaviors are perfectly replicated and transferred to the wearer. They create figurative and realistic scents like no other perfume brand can.
According to Victor Wong, each Zoologist perfume conveys a different way of life. "Sloth," for example, the scent of a sloth, is infused with relaxing aromas that encourage deceleration. Many calming ingredients of aromatherapy combined with mossy accents embody the tranquility of the sloth. The moss aromas were chosen due to the extreme slowness of sloths, which allows the cultivation of moss on their fur.
With Sloth, the founder of Zoologist has already received many compliments: He appears balanced and smells like a well-dressed gentleman. The essence of Zoologist summed up - the concept seems to work.
His intentions to make the good qualities of the animals his own are achieved, among other things, through the extremely high fragrance oil concentration of up to 25%, which makes wearing the scent a very intense and memorable experience.
Since the perfumes are all extraits, we recommend applying only a very small amount of the exclusive scents, as even a small amount smells very strong and long-lasting.
Choose the animal among the Zoologist perfumes whose way of life you want to share and embrace the natural scent of the animal kingdom. Order your Zoologist perfume online now at DASPARFUM & Beauty.
